Turkish Breakfast

For the “Your Story” section of this issue, we have chosen the story of Turkish breakfast, tea, and coffee. ‘afiyet olsun’ (Enjoy ) in advance!

Turkish breakfast is an indispensable tradition with its rich variety and the joy it brings to long conversations. It’s perfect for family gatherings, hosting special guests, or spending quality time with loved ones on weekends. Accompanied by Turkish tea, this breakfast features a selection of regional delicacies and stands out for being free of fast food and offering healthy options. Since it doesn’t carry unnecessary calorie loads, I recommend taking a nice walk afterward to make the most of your energy.

Turkish coffee is a globally recognized coffee type that has been an integral part of Turkish culture for centuries, renowned for its unique preparation and presentation. Made from finely ground coffee beans, it is brewed in a special pot called a cezve with water and optionally sugar. Traditionally, it is cooked slowly over embers or on a stovetop, aiming to create a dense layer of foam on top.

Turkish coffee is more than just a beverage; it is a ritual. It is typically served with a glass of water and a sweet treat such as Turkish delight.

In addition to accompanying delightful conversations, Turkish coffee is also famous for its fortune-telling tradition. The leftover grounds in the cup have been used for centuries in a mystical practice to “see” the future.

Turkish tea is prepared using a two-tiered teapot, where black tea is added to the top pot while water boils in the bottom one. The strong brew from the top is mixed with hot water from the bottom to create tea served as “light” or “strong,” depending on preference. In Turkey, tea is enjoyed at any time of the day and in any setting, from breakfast tables to business meetings and friendly gatherings. In Turkish culture, tea is more than just a drink—it symbolizes hospitality and sharing.
